Lie Sang Bong...

Continuing my research for catwalk inspiration i wanted to focus on makeup. As i mentioned in my previous posts i am particularly interested in the sole use of black in makeup to create a dark and striking look. Although most tribes i have looked at use bright colours on the face,  i feel black would work best for a catwalk look as it is bold and enhances shape which is important for a catwalk look. With this in mind i have studied the Fall/winter 2012 collection by Lie Sang Bong. The Korean designer controversially painted the faces of his models with black paint. Initially I looked at the video below.

Watching the video from a purely aesthetic point of view , i found the black faces really compelling. The black makeup i found so striking that it almost distracted me from the styling of the models. I felt a strong sense identity when watching this video and i saw the models almost as some kind of Gang, showing power and status. Lie Sang Bong mentioned the collection was about "Time travel and a moody kind of darkness". For me this collection has a strong tribal feel about it and i too want to experiment with the use of black makeup to create a striking primal look.
